LAKE COUNTY, FL. — Police have arrested a man with alleged gang ties in the murder of a man who was shot multiple times outside a home in Leesburg on July 8.
Ondrique D. Mosely, 18, of Lady Lake was arrested on Friday and charged with being a principal to first-degree premeditated murder in the slaying of James Jordan, 20, at 2227 Aitkin Loop at Overlook at Lake Griffin.
Police found 20-year-old James Jordan lying on the ground with several gunshot wounds. He was rushed to hospital but died of his injuries.
Investigators in the probable cause affidavit stated that they viewed security camera footage showing a car with three occupants parked outside of Jordan’s home at 12:55 p.m. Jordan walked down to the car, got inside and sat there until 1:53 p.m. He got out of the car, and “appears to shake hands or give a hand gesture to the front passenger.’
As he begins to walk away the front passenger opens fire and shoots him in the back several times.
The car moves forward about 30 feet, then backs up and a passenger in the back seat runs up and takes something from Jordan’s pocket. He, too, opens fire on Jordan but with a different weapon. That shooter returns to the car, then goes back to Jordan and fires more rounds at Jordan.
The driver speeds off in reverse, then turns around in a driveway before leaving the neighborhood.
Security cameras captured the license plate number for a car owned by a woman in Lady Lake.
The owner, who is described in the affidavit as Mosley’s caregiver, said she couldn’t remember if he was at home when the shooting occurred, but she said he was the sole user of the vehicle.
“I asked if her son was involved in any gang activity or violent crimes. She said she was not aware of any such activity. That response was indicative of deceit because the defendant had been on juvenile probation until his eighteenth birthday, and she, as his sole caregiver, would have to be present for any hearings or meetings with his probation officer. Those charges were related to violence and weapons charges,” Leesburg Sgt. E. Lamoreaux noted in the report.
There was more damning evidence.
Mosley reportedly confessed to Jordan’s sister.
“So, you were the driver?” she asked.
He said he was.
He said he didn’t know why the shooting occurred, that he was there with the group to sell marijuana to Jordan. Later he said it was about an altercation involving a female.
She recorded the call and emailed it to Leesburg police from her home in Georgia.
There were incriminating text messages on his phone to several other people, including some who were angry about the murder. He did not respond to those messages. In one communication Mosley referred to retaliation for a shooting that occurred in Wildwood.
There was also bullet damage inside the car. “It was indicative of a projectile being fired from within the car, penetrating the dome light housing, and exiting the car through the windshield,” the report said. Crime scene investigator also found a shell casing on the floorboard.
Cell phone tower data indicated he was in the area at the time of the shooting.
