LEESBURG, FLA. – The 87-year-old man who was robbed and shot at a gas station on Sept. 28 has died, and two of the three suspects have been arrested, police announced Monday.
Clarence Ervin died Sunday of his injuries in the brazen daytime attack at 2101 W. Main St.
Kenneth D. Bailey, 22, and 22-year-old Craig A. Stevenson Jr., both of Leesburg, were arrested Friday evening and charged with capital murder and aggravated battery with a firearm on a person over the age of 65.
Investigators are working with the State Attorney’s Office to get an arrest warrant, said Sgt. Shannon Walsh. His identity has not been released. Police are not saying if the suspects are cooperating with authorities, or the motive.
Cell phone video captured images of the assailants wearing ski masks. Two of the men walked up on the passenger side and the gunman went to the driver’s side. The video picked up the sound of two shots being fired point blank at Ervin sitting behind the wheel at a gas pump. The men fled on foot.
Persons with information are urged to call Leesburg Police at 352-787-2121, or Crimeline, which offers rewards, at 800-423-TIPS.
