LAKE COUNTY, FLA. – A man charged with attempted rape and trying to run over a police officer with his vehicle was sentenced Wednesday to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty.
Jephson Seguin, 22, was arrested in June of 2023 when police got a call from a woman who said a man came up behind her on Morningside Drive in Eustis, groped her, and threw her on the ground. When she yelled at him, he ran away.
When officers arrived, they said they noticed a man in a pickup truck who appeared to be trying to hide. He was wearing a hoodie and surgical mask matching the attacker’s description. When they approached the truck, he tried to run over an officer, who fired his handgun at the man.
Investigators found home surveillance video showing the man running to his truck.
He was found two days after the attack with a gunshot wound to the shoulder. He was hospitalized and admitted to being in the driver’s seat when shot. His truck was located at his grandmother’s house, where his DNA was found, matching evidence of the shooting. A surgical mask was also found next to the driver’s seat.
Seguin was convicted of attempted sexual battery with force likely to cause injury while wearing a mask, attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer with a weapon while wearing a mask, and fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement.
Circuit Judge James Baxley imposed the 15-year prison sentence, and 15 years sex offender probation after his release, and classifying him as a sexual predator.
“The sense of security taken from this victim by this defendant and the crimes he committed after that are deserving of this fifteen-year sentence,” said Walter Forgie, Chief Assistant State Attorney.
