LAKE COUNTY, FLA. – A man with a history of drug arrests and driving without a license was arrested Tuesday on a warrant and charged with vehicular homicide and violating probation.
Graedonn Humphrey, 33, was in a car that crashed into a SUV driven by Donald U. Jass on Dec. 3, 2023 on Plantation Boulevard at U.S. Highway 27 in December 2023.
Jass, 94, was a retired Army major, having served in Korea and the Vietnam War where he was was awarded the Bronze Star, according to his obituary.
A witness who stopped to help told FHP troopers that Humphrey said he could not stop.
Humphrey told troopers the brakes did not work. However, the vehicle’s “black box” revealed that he was 80 mph in a 55 zone, and had not applied the brakes until just before the crash. The brakes themselves were functional and the pads looked new.
In 2021, he was arrested and charged with carrying a concealed weapon, driving without a license, and possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana. Prosecutors dropped the driver’s license and marijuana charges. He was placed on probation for 36 months.
He violated that probation on Feb.16, 2024 when he was arrested in Sumter County for possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana and trafficking in fentanyl, 4 grams or more.
He was jailed in the Lake County jail and held without bond.
