Lake COUNTY, FLA. – Highway Patrol investigators are searching for the hit-and-run driver who left the scene of a fatal motorcycle accident.
The accident in Minneola occurred at 10:44 p.m. Saturday, according to the FHP.
The driver of a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe was traveling south on U.S. 27 approaching Citrus Grove Road in the inside lane. A 36-year-old motorcyclist from Leesburg was stopped at the traffic light facing south in the inside lane of the highway.
When the light turned green and the bike started to move forward, an SUV driven by a 42-year-old Polk City woman saw the slow-moving motorcycle and swerved to the outside lane. The driver of the Tahoe, which was following the SUV, did not see the bike in time.
The Tahoe driver fled the scene. The woman from Polk City and her 6-year-old passenger stayed until troopers arrived.
The motorcyclist was taken to South Lake Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Troopers later found the Tahoe and began processing it for evidence.
