History with a twist
Bob Grenier knows history. A preservationist, historical society member and former curator of the Lake County history museum, he is the author of several books on the areas surrounding Tavares, Fla., where he is a member of City Council.
He has now unleashed his pen on a historical fiction book based on real people and events from Central Florida’s rich history.
“Sarah’s Gallant Captain” contains action, adventure and romance from pre-Civil War days when he was a surveyor, to soldiering and post-war adventures.
The story centers on Capt. Melton Haynes, a real person who came to what would become Lake County in 1845.
Grenier’s fictional work includes some bone-chilling accounts of those days, including attacks by Seminoles, alligators and the forces of nature that only Florida can conjure up.
One of the characters apologizes to his wife, “Taking you away from our home and bringing you into this jungle.”
The book includes many touching scenes with Haynes’ younger brother and with his wife.
Grenier pays tribute to his father, Robert, by including his artist renderings in the book.
