Hurricane is blast from the past

Hurricane Camille 1969

Hurricane Isaias’ path reminds me of Camile in ’69 when the Air Force said, “We’ve got to get these airplanes out of here. Stanfield, you stay here.”

Later, in Okinawa, with a typhoon approaching, the planes were sent to Korea. “Stanfield, you stay here.” Again!

Some people had to stay to recover the planes when they returned, but really?

Had Camile turned from the Mississippi coast toward Panama City, Fla., Tyndall AFB would have been six feet under water. The base was later flattened in 2018 by Hurricane Michael.

Camile killed 250 people and caused more than $8 billion damage.

Isaias is not expected to anything like Camile, fortunately, but it will have a heavy storm surge, tons of rainfall and Category 1 winds when it hits the Mobile, Ala. Coastline.

I covered many storms for newspapers, including a tornado that killed more than 20 people in my book, Vampires, Gators and Wackos.”
